Structured Thinking

Common Problem Types

  1. Making Predictions
    • using data to make an informed decision about how things may be in the future
  2. Cateogrizing
    • assigning information to different groups or clusters based on common features
  3. Spotting the Unusual
    • identifying data that is different from the norm
  4. Identifying Themes
    • grouping categorized information into broader concepts
  5. Discovering Connections
    • finding similar challenges faced by different entities and combining data and insights to address them
  6. Finding Patterns
    • using historical data to understand what happend in the past and is therefore likely to happen again

SMART Questions

Avoid these questions

  • Leading Questions
    • a close friend asks you at his dinner party, "Did you enjoy the food?"
  • Closed-Ended Qeustions
    • Asking Yes/No questions
  • Questions Without Context
    • "Do you prefer hot or cold?"

S pecific

  • simple, significant and focused on a single topic or a few closely related ideas

M easureable

  • quantified and qssessed

A ction-Oriented

  • encourage changes

R elevant

  • have significance to the problem

T ime-bound

  • specify the time to be studied

Problem Domain

  • the specific area of analysis that encompasses every activity affecting or affected by the problem
    • help you set your base and lay out all your requirements and hypothesis before start investigating

SOW (Scope Of Works)

  • an agreed-upon outline of the work you are going to perform on a project
    • ex. work details, schedules (+ data preparation, validation, analysis of quantative and qualitative data sets, initial results, visuals etc.)

statement of work : a document that clearly identifies the products and services a vendor or contractor will provide to an organization

  • ex. objectives, guidelines, deliverables, schedule, costs etc.

scope of work : project-based and sets the expectations and boundaries of a project

    3. Timeline
    4. Reports
  • PROs : helps to make sure that everyone involved shares the understanding of what those business goals are and the plan for accomplishing them
